Death of Me

By Graham Peters,

From the smoldering heart of Los Angeles emerges The Project, the brainchild of songwriter and guitarist James Davis, delivering a head-spinning debut that kicks the damn door down. With its explosive first single, “Death of Me,” The Project shatters any expectations of a traditional rock band. Instead, this is a revolving collective of rock veterans who’ve come to play hard, fast, and loud. The track is a masterclass in precision chaos—a bold blend of power-pop sheen and guitar-driven, radio-ready rock 'n' roll that feels as fresh as it is nostalgic.

Death of Me” wastes no time lighting the fuse. From the opening riff, there’s a kinetic urgency—guitars snarl and shimmer in layers, pulled together by a rhythm section that hits like a freight train. Dennis Hill’s vocals are the perfect vehicle for this sonic assault: gritty, soulful, and edged with the kind of lived-in defiance that only comes from years in the underground trenches. It’s the kind of track that feels instantly familiar yet undeniably new, tailor-made for late-night drives, barroom jukeboxes, or blaring from festival stages.

What truly gives “Death of Me” its edge is the chemistry of its contributors. This is a lineup and a supernova of talent. With three guitarists—Scott Shiflett, Erik Ferentinos, and Jimmy Davis—trading leads and textures, the song rides a wave of melodic complexity and raw power. Kevin Baldes (Lit) and Jimmy DeAnda (BulletBoys) provide a backbone that swings with authority, locking everything into place with thunderous groove. Each element of the band is firing at full tilt, and you can feel the fun they’re having as they tear through the track’s three-and-a-half-minute runtime.

Lyrically, “Death of Me” strikes a chord with its portrayal of inner turmoil and romantic wreckage. It’s a breakup song scorched by California sun and soaked in gasoline—equal parts vulnerability and swagger. There's something cinematic about the way the music and lyrics play off one another, like the soundtrack to a protagonist watching their world unravel in slow motion. Hill delivers every line like a clenched fist, heartbreak with a snarl, and it’s that emotional tension that elevates the song from catchy to captivating.

The Project isn’t a new band, but a declaration. With “Death of Me,” James Davis and his revolving-door ensemble have thrown down a challenge to a rock scene that too often feels safe. This debut is loud, confident, and dangerously addictive, offering a taste of what happens when veteran players refuse to play by the rules. If this is just the first chapter, then rock fans better buckle up because The Project is about to take us on one hell of a ride.
