Liam O’Hannaidh, also known by his stage name Mo Chara, has been charged with displaying a Hezbollah flag—linked to a proscribed terrorist organization in the UK—during a Kneecap concert at the O2 Forum in Kentish Town, London, on 21 November 2024. The charge was filed last month following an investigation by counter-terrorism officers who reviewed footage from the event. The 27-year-old Belfast native appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, accompanied by his bandmates Naoise O Caireallain (Moglai Bap) and JJ O Dochartaigh (DJ Provai), as supporters rallied outside with flags and placards.

During the brief court appearance, O’Hannaidh confirmed his identity and was released on unconditional bail until his next hearing on 20 August. Prosecutor Michael Bisgrove emphasized that the case was not concerned with O’Hannaidh's political views on Palestine or criticisms of Israel, which he said are within his rights to express. Instead, the charge relates specifically to the display of a flag perceived to be in support of Hezbollah. Kneecap, the politically charged Irish rap group, has publicly denied any affiliation with Hezbollah or Hamas, both of which are banned in the UK.

Outside the courtroom, O’Hannaidh received applause from supporters chanting “Free Palestine,” while a lawyer for the band reiterated their commitment to defending freedom of expression. Kneecap, who first emerged in 2017 and gained mainstream recognition in 2024 after their debut album and a successful film, have built a reputation for their rebellious lyrics and Irish language advocacy. Though their fierce opposition to Israel’s actions in Gaza has bolstered their popularity among some listeners, it has also led to the cancellation of multiple performances this year, highlighting the polarising impact of their activism.
