“KANDA“ by GHEZO †††

GHEZO †††’s ”KANDA” isn’t something you just listen to—it kind of pulls you in slowly. You don’t know what to expect at first. The opener, “Minale,” starts like a whisper, but there’s something underneath it that makes you lean in. It’s not flashy or loud. It builds its world, one sample at a time. You can tell this came from someone who’s lived between cultures and wants to show what that sounds like.

By the time “Kelele” kicks in, there’s more rhythm, more movement. The name fits—it’s noisy in a way that feels alive, but never out of control. The vocal layers feel like they’ve been lifted from old tapes or field recordings and then reshaped into something new. It’s not clean in the typical studio sense, and that’s part of what makes it hit harder. GHEZO ††† worked with a sound engineer called the 90s, and the way the tracks are mastered gives them this edge—sharp but still raw.

“Casablanca” might be the most memorable track. It doesn’t do much on the surface—no big hooks, no dramatic changes—but it stays with you. A voice quietly repeats the word “Casablanca” like a chant, and it’s weirdly calming. There’s almost no need for drums here; the atmosphere holds it up. It feels like a memory being replayed. That’s probably what makes this whole project feel personal—it’s not trying to perform, it’s just sharing something.

Then “Soleil” brings the EP to a soft close. It’s warm and slow and feels a bit like watching the sun drop below the horizon. The mix of sounds from different places—Africa and Europe—is really clear in this track. It doesn’t feel forced at all. Everything sits where it should. The track doesn’t need to prove anything—it just lets you sit with it for a while, which is a nice way to end things.

Overall, ”KANDA” feels like a short trip into someone’s past and present at the same time. It doesn’t scream for attention, but it deserves it. GHEZO ††† doesn’t follow trends here. This EP sounds like it was made with real care—and a real reason behind it. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone, and that’s what gives it weight.
