Rosie Belvie

Graham
Artist Spotlight

Tell us about yourself.
Hi, my name is Rosie Belvie, and I’m a multi-genre-based singer, which means I’ve
been exploring different genres such as Afrobeat, Slow R&B, EDM – electronic music, and I’ve
recently jumped into Disco Funk.

Can you tell us a little about where Rosie Belvie’s musical journey began?
It started at a very young age. I’ve always been inclined to share my vocal ability, and I was
fortunate to have a career in Cultural Performing arts and Avant-garde theatre; however, with the
effects of Covid, I realised I wanted to create a movement of my own. So I teamed up with
Bullzeye Beats Music Productions in 2023 and has been building an alternative catalogue ever
since.

Who were Rosie Belvie’s earliest influences, and how do they still shape your music today?
My earliest influences are still heavily influential to me today, and they include Mariah Carey,
Whitney Houston, Celine Dion and Beyoncé. The greats. They have a unique, distinctive
sound, and I admire their work ethic and their artistry. Their songs are timeless and truly
memorable.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has never heard you before?
Humbly, I would say my vocals are powerful, strong and dynamic with a hint of sass and
attitude.

How do Rosie Belvie balance experimentation with staying true to her musical identity?
At this time, because I’m exploring different genres, I’m still finding my identity through
experimentation. As we move through, I’m allowing more facets of my voice to shine, and it’s
even surprising to me the different ranges I can sing that force me to slow down or hype up. I’m
learning about my body and the different energies that are required, which then filter into
understanding what kind of artist I want to be.

How does your creative process typically unfold from idea to finished track?
I like to start with writing topics for songs that derive from either personal experience or a
yearning to understand more of what I’m interested in. For example, I have a song called “State
of Mind”, that was a question on how to understand the way my mind works. I wanted to
discard old belief systems that no longer served me and find new ways of accepting and
deciphering the world and our current mind states today.
After exploring my topics, Bullzeye Beats will attach my ideas to a sound and a feeling that
inspires him to create the instrumental. Together, we co-create the lyrics to ensure they fall on
certain timings of percussion, and just like that, we’re in the studio. Within a few hours, we’re
ready to mix and master, although we allow a few days to listen over the track for any inspiration
to add extra nuances or instruments. I find working with Bullzeye to be effortless and
straightforward, which makes creating a lot more enjoyable.

Do you see songwriting as more personal therapy, storytelling, or both?
Both. I’ve come to realise that as artists, it is about sharing stories, often of one’s
own experiences or outlook on life. The more I explore my sound, the more I explore my thoughts and the deeper I dive into
understanding where these thoughts originate. This is followed by the emotions that naturally
conjure as a result, and so, to say it’s been a hell of a ride would be an understatement.
I’ve been finding healing in being unapologetic about my truth, and I think that’s what’s powerful
about creating your music.

What inspired your single “Tour Gaam Ka?”
Hey! We were fortunate to have Khoji Rhoodaar find us at Bullzeye Beats through word of
mouth here in Sydney. A passionate and spiritual artist with a heart of gold who was attracted by
the skills of Bullzeye in music production. Once in the studio, Khoji heard my sound and wanted me
to feature on the track, which I was more than happy to accept. “Tour Gaam Ka” is an
acknowledgement of Khoji’s village and surrounding areas in India, and I’m humbled to have
learned the names of his towns and gained an insight into their lifestyle and culture.

Can you walk us through the recording process — any challenges or surprises?
Regarding “Tour Gaam Ka”, a challenge was ensuring I could pronounce the Indian names as
perfectly as I could and also remembering them in the correct order. I’m lucky in the sense that I,
too, have a cultural background in Māori (indigenous to New Zealand), and our vowel sounds are
similar. The rolling of the tongue in certain places was a trick, but otherwise, the process was
enjoyable, and the energy in the room was something I’ll never forget. Shout out to Khoji and his
team for an unforgettable experience.

What do you hope listeners will take away from this release?
For “Living My Life”, my most recent release, I hope to empower people. To inspire them to
stand tall in who they are, to ignore haters, to focus on what truly makes them happy and to be
unapologetic when expressing themselves and their truths. Life’s too short to be anything but happy
in who you are and what you’re here to learn.

Who have been some key collaborators in your career, and how have they influenced your
work?

There are many. My family is a key component; they keep me grounded. I have cultural
mentors in my life who have helped shape my perspectives on the world and also my inner
world. In terms of my music journey thus far, I’d love to pay my acknowledgements to Khoji. The
way he approaches music is sincere, and he has a hyper focus on his vision, which I find
admirable. Ultimately, it’s Bullzeye Beats that inspires me to push the boundaries in my music
and is always full of fresh new ideas that seem never-ending.

Are there any “happy accidents” in the studio that made it onto your tracks?
Oh yes! In my latest release exploring disco funk, it was exhilarating to embody a funky, sassy
attitude, and naturally, the inspiration to sing “Ow!” came out unexpectedly, and so we
implemented it into the song. We had great laughs.

What’s been the biggest challenge in your journey as an artist so far?
Rather than the musical aspects, I would say it’s been more about learning business and
marketing. At times, it feels soul sucking, especially starting as an unknown and independent
artist. The algorithms seem flooded with new artists every day, and there is a fear that my music
won’t reach as far as we hoped. I’ve learned that it’s 80% marketing and 20% about the music.
But I’m confident that what I put out is quality, and if not now, then eventually it will be found by
someone who appreciates my songs and the messages embedded within.

How do you deal with creative blocks or self-doubt?
Very simply, I take time out to experience life. Go for hikes, visit the beach and eat good food. I
find returning to a state of gratitude always helps before returning to the plan. Taking it step by
step, resting where needed and trusting that my intentions are pure and my authenticity is what
will make it through at the end of the day. It helps me to be proud of my efforts to share my work,
and by doing this over time, there’s just no room for self-doubt anymore.

How does your personal life seep into your art, if at all?
Every song I’ve made has been reflective of the energy I was experiencing upon creation.
I’ve always understood how music is a part of life, and so creating music from scratch and from a
personal point of view acts as a timeline of my life experiences. It’s so humbling, eye-opening
and also vulnerable to exposing myself in this way, but it’s liberating, freeing and a beautiful way
to connect to others.
