Boy Grapes (Sean Grapin) is a Washington D.C.-based artist blending alternative rock, indie, and experimental elements into music that is both deeply personal and universally resonant. As a self-taught musician, songwriter, and producer, Boy Grapes has built a discography spanning multiple albums and EPs since 2018, constantly evolving his sound and pushing creative boundaries.
Raised in Falls Church, Virginia, Sean picked up the bass at 14, quickly followed by guitar and drums at 15, originally hoping to form a band. However, this journey led him to a passion for songwriting and production, crafting his earliest demos on his iPhone using GarageBand for iOS. These formative years resulted in his first full-length projects, Limelight and A Portrait of Daisies. As he honed his craft, he invested in better equipment, leading to “Fue”, Yeager, and “Virginia”, where he truly began to define his sound. Soil marked a breakthrough, showcasing his refined production techniques and deeply personal songwriting, followed by the introspective and raw energy of ROCKING HORSE and “UH HUH”.
A near-fatal suicide attempt and time spent in a psychiatric ward marked a pivotal turning point in Boy Grapes’ life and artistry. He returned to the Washington D.C. area, balancing his time between playing live shows, working at the legendary 9:30 Club, and continuously writing and recording music.
His latest project, I See When I Close My Eyes, is his most ambitious work to date, diving into themes of dreams, subconscious fears, and personal struggles, further cementing his reputation as a bold, forward-thinking artist. With high-energy, emotionally charged live performances, Boy Grapes and his band leave a lasting impact both on and off the stage. He values a personal connection with audiences, frequently giving away physical copies of demos and past releases at no charge to those in attendance.
Whether performing solo or with a full band, Boy Grapes is dedicated to breaking musical conventions, telling raw, unfiltered stories, and pushing himself to new creative heights.
