Shadows on the Dancefloor: GINAxC’s ‘My Darkness (Dorian Gray)’

Swedish-Balkan artist GINAxC has never been one to shy away from drama, and her latest single, “My Darkness (Dorian Gray)“, proves how masterfully she can thread theatricality through the pulse of the dancefloor. Arriving as the final preview before her upcoming album MY DNA (set for release on September 16th), the track is a brooding, intoxicating mix of gothic intrigue and club-ready energy. Inspired by the 2009 film adaptation of Dorian Gray, it shares the film’s obsession with beauty, corruption, and decay, but reimagines it in neon-lit synths and velvet shadows. From its opening bars, you know you’re not just listening to a song but being pulled into a cinematic world.

The soundscape GINAxC crafts here is elegant and menacing. Built on a hypnotic loop she composed herself, the track rides a dark groove that wouldn’t feel out of place in a late-night Berlin club, yet it carries the texture of something far more cinematic. The beat pulses like a heartbeat on edge, steady but brimming with tension, while layers of synth shimmer like reflections in a cracked mirror. It’s a sound that marries shadow and seduction—a soundtrack for revenge and release. You can dance to it, yes, but you’re also meant to feel unsettled, compelled, caught between allure and danger.

Lyrically, “My Darkness (Dorian Gray)” dives deep into the intoxicating moment when anger curdles into acceptance, when you stop resisting your darker impulses and embrace them instead. “Bitterness and revenge” are not painted as ugly emotions to overcome, but as part of the human condition—something dangerous, yes, but also strangely liberating. It’s this refusal to moralise that makes the track feel fresh. Instead of warning against darkness, GINAxC leans into it, embodying the gothic sensuality of Wilde’s tale while giving it a distinctly modern voice. In her hands, vengeance doesn’t whisper, but sings.

The track’s cinematic sensibility also reflects GINAxC’s deep connection to its inspiration. The 2009 Dorian Gray film may not have been universally beloved, but for her, it has become a personal touchstone, and that passion bleeds into the music. The song feels like a parallel adaptation—a dance track that mirrors the film’s themes of temptation, corruption, and the seductive pull of eternal beauty. It’s as though GINAxC has stepped into the role of Dorian herself, singing from within the portrait, her voice echoing the ache of vanity and the thrill of destruction.

And while the single is strong enough to stand on its own, anticipation also builds for its accompanying music video, due within a week of the track’s release. Given GINAxC’s flair for the theatrical and her talent for weaving imagery into sound, it’s safe to expect a visual extension of the song’s dark, sensual energy. If the track feels like a cinematic scene you can dance to, the video promises to make that metaphor literal, turning the dancefloor into a stage and the stage into a confession.

“My Darkness (Dorian Gray)” is a statement. It’s the sound of GINAxC fully stepping into her artistic vision, pulling influences from gothic literature, cinematic obsession, and electronic dance culture, and blending them into something unapologetically her own. If this is the final chapter before the unveiling of MY DNA, then GINAxC has left us with the perfect cliffhanger: a shadowy kiss, a dangerous smile, and a promise that the best is yet to come.
